POWER OF FATHERS

From these three sons of Noah came all the people who now populate the earth. After the flood, Noah began to cultivate the ground, and he planted a vineyard. One day he drank some wine he had made, and he became drunk and lay naked inside his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and went outside and told his brothers. Then Shem and Japheth took a robe, held it over their shoulders, and backed into the tent to cover their father. As they did this, they looked the other way so they would not see him naked. When Noah woke up from his stupor, he learned what Ham, his youngest son, had done. Then he cursed Canaan, the son of Ham:
“May Canaan be cursed May he be the lowest of servants to his relatives.” Genesis 9:19-25

God has also vested in fathers the power to curse. Noah was the first father found to have cursed his grandson Canaan instead of his son Ham, who dishonored him. Curse of a father is be differentiated from the curse of the law.

Canaan suffered heavy damages as a result of the curse Noah imposed upon him. God confirming the curse, dispossessed Canaan and descendants of the land they occupied and gave it to Abraham, a descendant of Shem, which now is occupied by the Israelites his descendants.

Why did Noah curse Canaan instead of Ham? First, in God’s law, anybody God has blessed cannot be cursed. “You shall not curse the people: for they are blessed” – Numbers 22:12.

Now God has blessed Noah and his children. “And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth” – Genesis 9:1.

Since Noah was not greater than God he couldn’t curse Ham whom God has blessed along with him. But the curse could still work on Ham’s children because the sin of a father is passed on to his children to the fourth generation. That was why Noah laid the curse on Canaan. Ham’s sin was in the blood of Canaan.

Because a father’s sin is passed on to his children to the fourth generation, God himself declared that when a father sins, he would punish his children to the fourth generation. “I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me” – Exodus 20:5.

Fathers need be very careful the things they do. If a father is an adulterer for instance, his children become adulterers not by choice but by inheritance. His children become Christians but they find themselves struggling to deal with what was injected into their blood by their father.

If your father committed a particular sin, or has a particular attitude you can break it by seeking for divine help or it continues to hunt your children too. I pray that God gives us understanding of these issues so to be sober to abstain from fleshly lust instead of enjoying them.

LET’S PRAY
Heavenly Father, give me grace enough to always remember that, children are mostly a reflection of their father. O Holy Spirit, give me grace enough to always seek divine help concerning any ungodly attitude so that it will not hunt my children in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen Amen Amen
